Resan till Egypten – en digital upptäcktsfärd –nu i engelsk översättning

Den 5 november 1900 stiger Wilhelmina och Walther von Hallwyl på tåget på Stockholms central. De är på väg till Egypten, där de stannar i fyra månader.

I Hallwylska museets digitala utställning ”Resan till Egypten” –nu också finns i engelsk översättning –tar vi del av fotografier som togs under resan eller köptes av lokala fotografer. Och hur turistandet kunde gå till vid förra sekelskiftet. Sällskapsdamen Ida Uhses detaljerade resedagbok ger oss inblick i hur sällskapet fördrev sina dagar. , vart de åkte, vad de köpte och vilka turistattraktioner de besökte.

Resan går med tåg till Neapel och därifrån med båt till Port Said i Egypten och sedan tåg igen till Kairo. Vi följer med på den specialhyrda ångbåten Columbia uppför Nilen och tar sedan tåget till Sudan. Wilhelmina och Ida Uhse plockar snäckor på Röda havets strand och rider på åsnor till kattgravarna i Beni Hasan. Ida Uhse klagar på gravskövlingen, samtidigt som de plockar med sig en kattmumie till barnbarnet. Resan avslutas med lite societetsliv på Kairos exklusivare hotell.

Det rika bildmaterialet tillsammans med resedagboken och texter om turismens historia ger en fyllig bild av just den här resan, men berättar också hur resandet i allmänhet kunde gå till vid förra sekelskiftet.

Om digitala utställningar

Att göra helt digitala och webbaserade utställningar är en verksamhet som fortfarande är ny och ganska outvecklad bland svenska museer. Vi söker oss fram mot praktiska arbetssätt och flexibla verktyg. Den här utställningen är gjord i ett verktyg som tillhandahålls av Google. Tack vare detta visas utställningen både från den egna webbplatsen och på Google Cultural Institute. På så sätt hoppas vi att fler besökare ska hitta vårt material.

A Trip to Egypt – Exploring on the Web

On 5 November 1900 Wilhelmina and Walther von Hallwyl board the train at Stockholm’s Central Station. They are on their way to Egypt, where they will be staying for four months.

The Hallwyl Museum in Stockholm now release the English version of the online exhibition ”A Trip to Egypt”. In the exhibition we can study the photographs that the von Hallwyls took themselves during the journey, or bought from local photographers. We also get an insight into life as a tourist at the turn of the century 1900. Wilhelmina von Hallwyl had a lady companion, miss Ida Uhse, who kept a detailed travel journal. Thanks to this we know how the party spent their days, where the went, what they bought and what tourist attractions they visited. Ida Uhse also gives her opinion about things. For example she does not like the ”hoards of tourists” that barge into the ancient temples, when she wants to admire them in peace.

Our travellers take the train from Stockholm to Naples and from there they continue by ship to Port Said in Egypt and then train again to Cairo. We get to follow them around the modern metropolitan and later up the Nile on the Steamship Columbia and on the desert train to Sudan. Wilhelmina von Hallwyl and Ida Uhse pick sea shells on the shores of the Red sea and ride on donkeys to the Cat Cemetary in Beni Hasan. Ida Uhse complains about how ancient graves have been plundered, but the next thing we know the party take home a cat mummie that they found on the ground. The trip finishes by some jet set dinner parties at the luxury hotels in Cairo.

The generous amount of photos together with the travel journal and additional texts about history of tourism gives the visitor a detailed impression of this very journey as well as of travelling.
