Historical reenactment is a phenomenon where historical eras are brought to life. Enthusiasts from around the world gather to immerse themselves in another time. Here, costumes play a central role.
Historical clothing can tell us about people's living conditions in a direct way. They reflect views on the body, fashion, and ideals, but even details like material choices can reveal the wearer's social context and opportunities. Wearing historical garments gives us the feeling of being closer to history, but how does one recreate historical attire in modern times?
The Hallwyl Museum is exhibiting four newly created ball gowns inspired by 19th-century fashion – from the Empire period to the turn of the century. The garments, crafted by both professionals and enthusiasts, provide a broad view of how historical reenactment can take shape.

Talk: From 1860’s to 2020’s: recreating a historical gown
In late 2023, Susanne Brouwer, recent tailor graduate from the Meesteropleiding Coupeur in Amsterdam, visited the Hallwyl museum collection to study an 1865 custom made ball gown. As her graduation project, Susanne created a replica of Wilhelmina’s dress, combining research and craftsmanship in the process. What lessons can we learn from tailoring techniques and materials of the past? Join us in this talk with Susanne about her research and work+ Maria Franzon, conservator.
The talk will be held in English.
Price to listen at the museum: SEK 200. Price to listen on Zoom: SEK 100.
